SEMATECH Montopolis Research Center
Austin, Texas
This center established an Austin campus for SEMATECH, a state-of-the-art research consortium created to assure the leadership in American semiconductor research and manufacturing technology. The center features a 132,800 square-foot Fab with mechanical penthouse, cleanrooms, testing and development areas, a wastewater treatment facility, a utility support building, and a two-level scrubber deck with chemical distribution spaces on the first level. Also included are below-grade tunnels for utility distribution, and an above-grade steel frame for overhead utilities and primary site utilities. An adjacent 120,000 square-foot office building houses the administrative and research personnel involved with the work in the Fab.
The center gives researchers a blank slate with which to develop advanced manufacturing processes, materials, and equipment, and validate their finds in a proofing facility that simulates the intensity of the production line. Results of this research are given to member companies, who then apply them commercially.
This project gave several technology companies a base with which to collaboratively further their research of semiconductor manufacturing. The campus proved to be a hub of innovation after its completion, and spurred further investment in the now-renowned technology sector of Austin.
