Texas State Veterans Home
Tyler, Texas
As GSC Architects’ fourth large project for the Texas State Veterans Home, the design places the 100 residents in a series of homes across the campus. This is a direct reflection of the small homes concept that a better quality of life is achieved through these means, rather than house all of the functions of the institution in one single building. The standards of the Veterans Administration are incorporated into this unique arrangement, with the end result being a prototype for future Veterans Homes. Each of the 10 homes functions as an independent unit for 10 residents, with a “residential” kitchen, living room, media room, front porch, and back porch. Walking paths connect each home to the other units, as well as the central Community Building. Housed in this common area are administration space, family consultation rooms, and a chapel.
GSC Architects drew on the expertise gained from previous Veterans Home projects, giving extra attention to the longevity and durability of the buildings and furnishings, as well as highlighting resident comfort and the generation of a strong sense of community.
Interaction with the environment and other residents is spurred by the arrangement of the site. The design intentionally reflects the surroundings, rather than standing out as an obvious institutional entity.
