Dennis E. Cowan Elementary School for the Austin Independent School District is laid out in a pinwheel configuration to group classroom areas together, yet keep the central core of cafeteria, library, gymnasium and administrative offices within close proximity. There is also a commons area and covered porch for each pair of classroom wings.
Included in the building are 34 classrooms for Pre-Kindergarten through 5th Grade, special education classrooms, a cafeteria and kitchen, performance stage, gymnasium, library and administrative offices as well as teaching rooms for art and music.
