AISD Southwest

Middle School
Austin, Texas

The Southwest Middle School located on Slaughter Lane and Highway 1826 is being built for the Austin Independent School District. This campus is designed for 1,100 students and is currently programmed at 170,000 SF. The steep site slopes 40 feet from the entrance on Slaughter to the peak. Therefore, the campus will be stepped along the sloped landscape in a terrace fashion on three levels making construction more economical while also giving the user a sense of the natural change in elevation of the site itself. The first level contains the administration, fine arts, kitchen, dining, gyms and locker rooms. The upper levels contain the Library, Specialty Classrooms Wing, as well as the 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Wings. We are designing the campus to meet the Austin Energy Green Building Program Two-Star Rating. Our sustainable approach to the school's design will focus on the building envelope's materials, indoor air quality, efficient systems and natural lighting.
