The St. David's HCA partnership asked GS&C and the design team to upgrade and expand St. David's main hospital in Austin, Texas. The program called for 97,000 square feet of new hospital space and a 50-space parking garage to be added to the existing building. In addition to the new construction 27,000 SF of the existing building was renovated. The project includes: an expanded and upgraded emergency department, an expanded and upgraded surgical services suite, a new heavy diagnostic imaging center and a central sterile supply.
While incorporating St. David's standard finishes into the design solution, GS&C utilized an original use of color, floor finishes and ceiling soffits to break up the hospital's long corridors improving way-finding for patients and staff members alike. Accent colors were used on the walls and the floors of the operating rooms to visually enhance the sometimes sterile feeling of a medical environment. A circular shape created in the floor tile of the operating rooms also serves as a visual cue to assist in placing the patient under the equipment boom and surgical lights. Wood tones were used in the nurse station desks and on other interior elements to add warmth to working areas of the hospital.
