Alkek Library

Texas State Univ.
San Marcos, Texas

The Alkek Library is the dominant feature of the university's campus masterplan, which links the older campus buildings with the new. The building's size, location and function determined its classical style. The Classic Roman Travertine and a polished Texas granite accentuates the primary exterior skin giving the building an ageless quality. The library was designed to house 1.5 million volumes and 4,300 readers. Beyond these basic functions, it accommodates the Student Learning Advancement Center, the Faculty Advancement Center, the Southwestern Writers Special Collection, and the University Media Services Department. In the future the facility can easily be expanded by one level if needed.
